Swiss sound artist wins 'Sound of Aarhus 2017'

The sound artist Andres Bosshard, 60, from Zurich today was announced as the winner of the Danish 'Sound of Aarhus 2017' competition, organised by the European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 and the Danish Composers' Society.

Andres Bosshard has been awarded the prestigious Aarhus 2017-prize of 200.000 DKK for his unique sound-project “The Sonic Ark”, which will unfold during 2017, when the Danish city of Aarhus holds the title of European Capital of Culture.

"I'm very happy to have won the competition. It provides a fantastic perspective to be allowed to develop and realise a new project in a city and region, which with Aarhus 2017, has the opportunity to show all of its culture in a European framework," says Andres Bosshard, who since 1990 has worked with sound architecture, sound installations, sound gardens and has created "sound bridges" between different districts.

Andres Bosshard looks forward to planning and creating his works together with the citizens of Aarhus and Central Denmark Region. And according to the jury, it is precisely this collaboration with citizens that Andres Bosshard's work is well known for.

"Andres Bosshard's 'The Sonic Ark' for Aarhus 2017 brings together a grand, highly imaginative art work and the population of the city which will bring it to life. A European Capital of Culture can only thrive if citizens truly participate. Bosshard, one of Europe´s great sound artists, has produced a work which will bring people together to create, imagine and  inspire," says member of the jury Mary Miller.

'The Sonic Ark' was selected from a strong field of 31 competitors from all over the world.

"We're very excited at the prospect of collaborating with Andres Bosshard. With his special musicality, Andres Bosshard finds completely unique sound, which surrounds or links with a place. The work 'The Sonic Ark' is sensuous, sensational, emotional, memorable and timeless. It represents a strong picture of our creative year of culture," says Programme Director of Aarhus 2017, Juliana Engberg.
