Audiences can look forward to experience more than half of the events in European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 free of admission, thanks to an amazing support from collaborators, funds, sponsors, the Region, the Municipalities and the State. In order to ensure that as many people as possible have the opportunity to take part in the European Capital of Culture, it has been a priority to allocate more than 70 percent of the total budget to programme activities.
In the year to come, every corner of the Region will offer art and cultural events, and audiences can look forward to many outstanding experiences. To further ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be a part of the year as European Capital of Culture, Aarhus 2017 has invested DKK 5,4m. to develop a long-term volunteer programme together with Tuborgfondet. The volunteer programme is expected to continue after 2017, and more than 1500 people from 59 different nations have already signed up as volunteers.
In connection with the programme launch, European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 has received the EU’s Melina Mercouri Prize of £1,5m. as an acknowledgement and support for activities that will ensure a permanent legacy when the year as European Capital of Culture ends. Chairman of the Aarhus 2017 Foundation and Mayor of Aarhus, Jacob Bundsgaard, is certain that 2017 will be a year of growth, and that the city will increase its force of attraction for new inhabitants as well as the business community.
