Aarhus Theatre has brilliantly succeeded in getting the world-famous American director, Robert Wilson, to Aarhus for the capital of culture year in 2017. Wilson has worked with prominent artists such as Lady Gaga, Tom Waits and Lou Reed and is known for his work Woyzeck and The Black Rider amongst many others. Now he will come to Aarhus to put his own characteristic signature on the brand new visual and musical spectacle – EDDA – based on Norse mythology.
EDDA is staged by Robert Wilson in a grand spectacle based on Jon Fosse’s rethinking of the famous mythological texts written in Iceland in 1200s and 1600s. Fosse is Norway’s biggest playwright since Henrik Ibsen
Theatre director Trine Holm Thomsen comments:
“I am tremendously happy that we managed to get an internationally recognised name to Aarhus. Wilson is one of the biggest theatre directors in the world. His performances are almost iconic and he will at the same time work with prominent artists like Jon Fosse, Arvo Pärt, CocoRosie and some of the best actors in Norway, I am convinced that what awaits the Aarhus public is a great and rare visual and auditory experience.”
CEO of Aarhus 2017, Rebecca Matthews, is also pleased with the cooperation:
“In 2017 all international eyes will be looking upon Aarhus and the region and our year as the European Capital of Culture. We will present a unique and ambitious programme, filled with spectacular events. Aarhus Theatre’s play, EDDA, with legendary Robert Wilson at the directorial helm, will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of the capital of culture year and attract interest and attention both from Denmark and abroad,” says Matthews.
The Estonian contemporary composer, Arvo Pärt, alongside the American indie-siblings CocoRosie, will create the background music for EDDA. The play will be in New Norwegian with 13 of Norway’s leading actors on stage, and with Danish subtitles.
