The project, FRESH EYES, is a collaboration between Galleri Image and Aarhus Literature Centre where international photo artists and writers visit Aarhus to experience the city and interpret the city‘s urban spaces in new ways. In 2017, the project will culminate with exhibitions, publications and seminars. The project is supported by Aarhus 2017.
FRESH EYES started in 2013 and runs until 2017, through this time international photo artists and writers have the opportunity to visit Aarhus, talk to locals and develop their own artistic idea of rethinking and interpreting the city, through eyes. Head of Gallery Image, Beate Cegielska, are excited about the collaboration with Aarhus Literature Centre and the 20 international artists who will visit Aarhus:
„The artists come from Europe, Asia and Africa. To begin with, it was ”only” photo artists, but now the project has expanded and poets and writers are included. The first artist to visit was the photo artist Tom Lovelace who spent a month in Aarhus in August 2013. Other artists have followed in his shoes ever since.”
Beate Cegielska believes the international artists visiting, can provide the city a fresh breath:
”The artists can discover new sides and angles in the city that we do not necessarily notice in the everyday life. Their artistic eye and creative interpretation of Aarhus is incredibly interesting, and it is an opportunity for the artists to be inspired by the city’s urban spaces – both in the form of pictures and text,” explained Beate Cegielska.
In 2016, the international artists and writers continue to visit Aarhus and create more exciting artwork for FRESH EYES.
Culmination in 2017
In 2017, the project will culminate with a big manifesto in Grønnegade where Galleri Image is located. The streets will transform into a large exhibition with the work of the international artists. The artwork will be presented in an unconventional way such as with projections and readings in backyards. The exhibition falls together with the celebration of the 40th anniversary of Galleri Images.
Furthermore, a large art book will be released, called ‘a coffee table art book’, with selected artwork from the project.
“The art book is a gift to Aarhus and will be as an example something companies could give to their guests,” said Cegielska.
Exhibition in Galleri Image, workshops, readings, audio and video exhibitions are a part of what will be ongoing in Aarhus 2017 through this project. Until 2017, some smaller events will occur such as Artist Talks and seminars that will attract attention to the project. One of those seminars will happen in November.
