On Saturday 9 May 2015, European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 joins the celebrations of Europe Day at Store Torv in Aarhus.
In cooperation with Europabevægelsen, Aarhus 2017 will mark the anniversary of the historical ‘Schuman Declaration’, which is considered the beginning of the European Union.
"Cultural diversity and dialogue is one of the key characteristics of the European Union, and the EU promotes cultural international cooperation and mutual understanding as basic fundamentals through activities such as the European Capitals of Culture,” says Rebecca Matthews, CEO at Aarhus 2017.
This year, Europe Day coincides with the 30th anniversary of the concept of European Capitals of Culture.
"The European Capital of Culture has seen considerable success since Athens 1985. The title is a unique opportunity to make the most of a city and region’s cultural assets alongside its European neighbours and to boost long-term development. Furthermore, the title is important for growing tourism, for jobs and for raising the voice and visibility of a region. We are working to ensure that Aarhus 2017 will be a major success across these areas,” says Rebecca Matthews.
The Europe Day event will take place on Saturday 9 May 2015 at Store Torv, Aarhus, at 10-13. Minister of Defence Nicolai Wammen will be among the speakers.
