Rescue / Public Movement

An Aarhus 2017 Commission and Part of Little Rebellions
Presented by Public Movement

Rescue is a dance of politics, an endless preparation drill for an inevitable disaster. It takes place in the aftermath of an unknown scenario, while the ruins are also used as it’s surface. Rescue is an exercise of life-saving and a street party, celebrating the intimacy that can be created between human bodies.

On a pile of rubble, five Public Movement Members perform a composition of movements, derived from their research and training with rescue forces in Israel and Europe.

This choreography of extrication is an extension of useful and familiar movements that are usually practiced in sites of mass casualty. Disconnected from threat or trauma, the carefully synchronized set of movements evoke a sense of togetherness that binds passersby and performers, somewhere between danger and compassion.

A new durational version of the action Rescue was specially developed for Aarhus as part of European Cultural Capital events. For four hours each day at Pustervig Torv a new state-ballet will be performed.

Rescue is based on the action Emergency (2008) by Omer Krieger and Dana Yahalomi.

Public Movement is a performative research body which investigates and stages political actions in public spaces. It studies and creates public choreographies, forms of social order, overt and covert rituals. In the last eleven years, Public Movement has explored the regulations, forces, agents, and policies, formations of identity and systems of ritual which govern the dynamics of public life and public space. Public Movement enquires the political and aesthetic possibilities residing in a group of people acting together.

Public Movement was founded in December 2006 by Omer Krieger and Dana Yahalomi, the latter became it’s sole directer in 2011.
